SS Tube Technology win Karun’s Karting Carnival!
SS Tube Technology took a 1st and 6th place at ex-F1 and current LMP and Formula E driver Karun Chandhok’s charity karting event at Whilton Mill on Thursday 23rd October. The annual event, now in its 4th year, is organised to raise money for the Vishnu Devananda Charitable Trust (VDCT), which has been supporting and sponsoring the education of very poor slum children in and around Chennai, India. 40 teams from in and around the motorsport industry took part in the event, including entrants from Lotus F1, Aston Martin Racing and Motorsport Magazine. SS Tube Technology entered two teams, with Nick Henry (Engineering Director), Adrian Mertens (Design Engineer) and Kevin Lilla (Quality Engineer) in Team 1, and Mike Dewhirst (Chief Technical Officer), Ben Linday (Project Engineer) and Chris Faulkner (Development Engineer) in Team 2.
After two 1-hour heats, which determined the best teams to fight it out for ultimate honours in the final, Team 1 qualified on pole position after a Heat 1 win, with Team 2 qualifying in 8th after a 4th place in Heat 2. With darkness well and truly set in for the start, Team 1 established a 3 second lead at the end of the first stint, and as the driver change pitstops shook out, ended up in a very close battle with the second placed team, narrowly taking the win at the end of the 45 minute race by 1.9 seconds. Team 2 made a great start, but a first lap incident cost them some time early on. But a great fightback, and two last ditch overtaking moves on the final lap resulted in a 6th place finish, only five hundredths of a seconds off 5th place, and 22 seconds off the winner.
